Second Harvest Japan (2HJ), which has been supporting the areas affected by the Noto Peninsula Earthquake in Ishikawa Prefecture that occurred in January 2024, will start providing “Free Food Support Packages” from October 2024. In addition, 2HJ transported additional food from its Saitama Base to the Nakanoto Base on September 27th to support the areas affected by heavy rains in Ishikawa and Noto that occurred in September.
The food support package project to provide free food is being implemented in Suzu City, Ishikawa Prefecture, which was damaged by the collapse of houses due to the earthquake and tsunami, and has also suffered from a continued lack of water supply and limited places to buy food due to the closure of supermarkets and other retailers. 2HJ will provide free food packages of around 10kg with various food items to households living in temporary housing, rented housing, and those who continue to evacuate at home who are worried about the financial aspects of rebuilding their lives amidst difficult evacuation situations.
2HJ is currently accepting applications in collaboration with the government and local organizations, and plans to deliver cardboard boxes with the 2HJ logo (the photo below right) to 1,500 households. The boxes will be delivered once a month, for a total of three times per household.

In March, 2HJ Nakanoto Base was opened in Nakanoto-cho, Kashima, Ishikawa Prefecture, as a “hub” to provide mid-term support to the disaster-stricken areas after emergency support.
2HJ continues to expand its network with government and other stakeholders, and enhance the functions of the Nakanoto Base in order to provide sufficient nutritious food to people in need of food assistance in the disaster-stricken areas.

Second Harvest Japan (2HJ) commenced full-scale operations of its Nakanoto base in May 2024 to provide med-term support to areas affected by the Noto Peninsula earthquake.
Hitomi Yokote, CEO of 2HJ visited the Nakanoto Town Hall on June 4, and exchanged opinions on a variety of topics with Yoshiyuki Miyashita, Mayor of Nakanoto-cho, including the current situation in the disaster-stricken areas and the support system based on partnerships between the government and private organizations, which will become even more important in the future. We also visited the NGO Collaborative Center based in Nakajima-cho, Nanao City, and had discussions about the effective use of the 2HJ Nakanoto Base and collaborations for future support activities.
To date, 18 of NGOs and local support groups have registered at the Nakanoto base, and they have come to pick up the food they need to support the affected victims. The base is equipped with frozen stockers to provide refrigerated and frozen products in addition to room-temperature products. We use a forklift to carry-in, move food to organize the 444.78 square-meter-warehouse.
2HJ will continue to strive to expand the functions of the Nakanoto base, and enhance its collaborative network with the government and various support organizations. This will help provide nutritious and sufficient food that meets the needs of the disaster-stricken areas.

Second Harvest Japan to Launch Full-scale Operation of Nakanoto Base, Providing Mid-term Support to Disaster-stricken Areas in Ishikawa.
Second Harvest Japan (2HJ), Japan’s first food bank headquartered in Taito-ku, Tokyo, has commenced full-scale operations at its Nakanoto base in Nakanoto-cho, Kashima, Ishikawa Prefecture, to provide mid-term support to areas affected by the Noto Peninsula earthquake. 2HJ has consistently collaborated with disaster relief and local organizations to launch this base, and to continue working together in existing emergency assistance.
The 2HJ Nakanoto base serves as a hub to support disaster-stricken areas. It has easy access to affected regions and highways and is conveniently located for transporting food from 2HJ’s Kanto region bases and company partners. The warehouse, with an area of 444.78㎡, has plenty of space for food storage, and there is a parking space in front for loading and unloading food. Twelve organizations that provide food assistance participated in three information sessions starting on April 23. Participants were introduced to 2HJ’s activities, the registration procedure, the usage rules for receiving food from 2HJ and a tour of the warehouse. In addition to food transported from the 2HJ Saitama base, OREO cookies were shipped directly from Mondelēz Japan Limited on May 8. We plan to establish a proper operation cycle for food transportation and delivery within the next month.
After the period of emergency assistance, some people might still be forced to live in temporary housing. Even if they are able to return to their homes, rebuilding their daily lives, including repairing destroyed houses, will be costly. Consequently, it is expected that some people will continue to face disaster-related hardship in the future.
”Even now, four months after the earthquake, many people in the affected areas still need food assistance,” said Hitomi Yokote, CEO of 2HJ. “To provide continuing support, 2HJ will strengthen cooperation with the government and other organizations. Additionally, there is a shortage of food in these areas, so we would be grateful for food donations and financial support from our company supporters. ”
2HJ will continue to work with stakeholders to expand the functions of the Nakanoto base and enhance the collaborative network with each partner organization. This will help provide nutritious and sufficient food to people in need, including those who are evacuees in their homes.
2HJ’s Support Activities in Areas Affected by the Noto Peninsula Earthquake
2HJ arrived at the site on January 6, immediately after the disaster occurred, and held a soup kitchen for victims at a community center in Nanao City, Ishikawa Prefecture, together with the disaster relief team Gorilla and other local organizations. During the first 10-day soup kitchen, a total of 12,620 meals were served to 3,550 people. The second and third soup kitchens were also held in collaboration with Gorilla and local organizations.
Additionally, 2HJ visited Wajima City, where the Higashi Honganji temple Soup Kitchen Group, Association for Aid and Relief Japan, and Nippon International Cooperation for Community Development provided food assistance. 2HJ also visited Suzu City, where Peace Boat Disaster Relief conducted their soup kitchen to bring food that meets the needs of each area based on surveys conducted in advance.
2HJ´s Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Project
2HJ has been implementing a three-year plan starting in 2022 to build a wide-area food support project for emergency situations together with its affiliated food banks, using dormant deposits. The goals include creating an ‘Assessment Sheet’ to determine necessary support details, a ‘Timeline’ to summarize actions for smoother support immediately after a disaster occurs, and a ‘Guideline’ to plan each support activity.
Starting in 2023, 2HJ has been holding study sessions in the Chugoku and Kyushu regions to develop a food support timeline tailored to the needs of each region and to foster networking.

Second Harvest Japan (2HJ) continues to support areas affected by the Noto Peninsula Earthquake, and opened a Nakanoto base in March 2024 to provide mid-term support for the stricken areas. We start providing food in earnest with the cooperation of volunteers and local stakeholders.
On April 23rd, 2HJ held the first information session for groups providing food assistance to disaster victims in order to receive food at Nakanoto base. On the day of the event, two organizations participated in the morning, and three organizations showed up in the afternoon. We introduced 2HJ’s activities, the registration procedure and rules to receive food, and in addition offered a tour of the warehouse to the participants.
Some groups requested to pick up food soon after the first session for their immediate support on the day, with which we realized that even four months after the disaster, there are still many victims lacking in food. A total of three information sessions are scheduled, and we will continue to serve groups that provide food assistance.
2HJ will continue to expand the functions of the Nakanoto base in order to provide sufficient nutritious food to people in need in the disaster-stricken areas.

Due to severe road conditions, including highway closures caused by heavy snow, we arrived at the site much later than originally planned, however along the way, could deliver food to evacuated soccer club members from a high school in Ishikawa Prefecture.
2HJ in collaboration with the disaster relief group Gorilla and local organizations are running a soup kitchen from Feb. 7th to 13th at Nakajima Elementary School in Nanao-city. In addition, we delivered food to areas such as Wajima-city where AAR Japan and the affiliated temple continues to conduct soup kitchens, and visited NICCO which has been supporting the around area. 2HJ also brought in requested food for Peace Boat in Suzu-city.
The food 2HJ brought in this time included frozen cut vegetables from Tokyo Children & Family Supporters, which is easy to use even under emergency situations and raw eggs, and disposable containers donated by KOHSOKU., LTD, which are essential to serve meals in areas without water supply.
Many victims are still forced to live in evacuation centers. While prioritizing emergency support, 2HJ considers mid to long-term support during the recovery and reconstruction period in the future, so that we have been assessing the current disaster supports and also conducting property searches of local warehouses and other properties to secure future bases of activity in the disaster-stricken areas.
